Scandinavian Prog Rock Bands That Are Worth Checking Out

Prog rock still remains a popular form of rock music with many fans the world over. Some of the best bands in this genre are the Scandinavian prog rock bands. Progressive rock started life in the late 60s with the Beatles Sergeant Pepper' and the psychedelic noodling of early Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd went on to dominate the progressive rock scene in the 1970s along with other bands, such as Yes and Genesis.

Sweden have produce many excellent progressive rock bands, one of the most successful is Beardfish. Beardfish create music that is along the lines of Genesis and Yes, but with a modern take. They formed in 2001 and the band's first album, Fran En Plats Du Ej Kan Se was released in 2003 and achieved much success.

Another great Swedish progressive rock band are The Flower Kings. The band formed in August 1994 by veteran guitarist Roine Stolt. The band have produced 11 acclaimed albums in their lifetime. The band is influenced by jazz and blues music and are characterized by their use of sharp dynamic changes, polyrhythms, heavy bass, vocal harmonies, abstract lyrics, and extended songs.

Magic Pie from Norway celebrate 70s sounds and blend it with modern rock music. The group used string melodies, catchy guitar riffs, 70s organ sounds, strong melodies, powerful vocal arrangements and tight bass and drums. There music is both gentle and heavy. They formed in 2005 and have produced three successful albums. Their next album is due in the latter part of 2014.

The Finnish back, Apocalyptica were formed in Helsinki in 1993 and are very unusual in that they have three cello players and a drummer, instead of the usual guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. The band has three classically trained cellists and the band produce a unique form of progressive heavy metal music. They started life as a Metallica covers band on cellos but soon starting creating their own music.

Also from Finland, are Hidria Spacefolk. This fantastic band blend psychedelic space rock with folk music. As well as guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, the band also use cello, violin, flute, didgeridoo, marimba, mandolin, sitar and vibraphone to create their music. The band was formed in 1999 and have released eight albums on an independent label.

Kingston Wall are also from Helsinki and create beautiful music that is influenced by the likes of Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Their music combine eastern themes with vivid psychedelia producing a lush space rock. The band have remained an underground outfit and a cult favorite with progressive rock fans. They have released three albums, as well as several remix albums and a live DVD.

The Swedish prog rock band, Moon Safari have a symphonic instrumental vibe that uses complicated vocal harmonies. These vocals are an important part of their overall sound and they often sing acapella as well as produce songs using guitars, bass and drums. They just love to play around with unusual time signatures and a lot of their sings exceed the 10 minute mark. The band won the Vox Pop vote at the 9th annual Independent Music Awards for their "In the Countryside" album. Moon Safari are a band to definitely check out if you are a fan of the genre.
