Becoming The Best Bluegrass Flatpicking Guitarist

By Ryan Snyder

Something that tends to be common among these types of guitar players is the fact that this style runs in their family in a way. A Bluegrass flatpicking guitarist will usually have a father or mother who has played in this style, or at least an aunt or uncle. In some cases, this style has been in the family for generations, and they will have grandparents or even great-grandparents who played this way.

When someone plays the guitar in this style and genre, it is often true that they can play a few other stringed instruments as well, since there are a number of other ones that are quite popular in this genre. Some of the ones that you will most commonly see are the mandolin, the banjo, and even the bass, the latter sometimes being an upright bass, which is much more difficult to play than electric ones. There are some who can even play the drums too, something that's a huge asset for many players.

A great idea for anyone trying to get better at this style is to look up some of the greats who have contributed to the Universal Song Book. There are so many people who have devoted their lives to practicing, studying, and performing music that you can learn a lot just by listening to them. Seeing what they did, how they did it, and how people liked it can give you great ideas on how you might want to play.

Sometimes a person is trying to find members for their band. If you want a particular kind of guitar player, you should be very clear about this. Otherwise, you might get the wrong types of players trying out.

There are plenty of people who have compiled a list of those who are considered the greatest in this genre. This is a great place to start if you're looking for influences to draw from. While some people might say that one person or another is the very best guitar player of this style, it all comes down to one's own personal taste.

This style of picking isn't really any different than any other picking style except for the genre that it's in. Bluegrass often has guitar players fingerpicking. That is why this style has its own special name.

The best musicians are usually the ones who have been around the longest. Not only are these the individuals who will have the most experience on their instrument, but they have also seen different genres grow and fade in popularity. This wisdom gives them a huge upper hand.

It is essential that you never give up when you are trying to learn the skills necessary to play like a professional. People might have a hard time with different steps in the process, but it can be a comfort to know that even the best players had these same issues at one point. The difference between them and everyone else is that they didn't give up, rather they kept pushing forward and trying their best.
