Exploring The Birth Of Blues Music

By Scott Gibson

When it comes to music, there are several popular genres. In most cases, people either buy or download a wide variety. At the same time, blues music can also still be heard at a number of dive bars around the world.

The history of the genre is lesser known than many others. For, there is no detailed information as to the timeline related to the origin of the genre. Still, as the style evolved over time, most relate the style back to the African Continent.

The best estimate as to when the genre was born is believed to be the early 1900s, most likely somewhere between 1901 and 1905. During this period, a number of recordings were made which now closely resemble modern day blues. Later, the genre became better known when the music of black workers started singing songs which included technical themes and emotional lyrics.

As with other genres, there are a number of subsets within the genre. For example, there are acoustic, electric and R&B. One reason this is the case, is that each individual artist often adds elements of individuality whether playing solo or in a band, When it comes to acoustic styles, the sound is most likely as close as one can get to hearing what the genre was like in the beginning.

Modern day styles associated with the genre are believed to have been born out of the slave trade. For, as with many hymnals, it was the simple solo songs which slaves sang in the fields while working from which a number of songs have been passed down through generations. Often known as call and response, the style was later accepted as a natural part of the genres known as blues or rhythm and blues. Whereas, the songs often held a great deal of emotion due to the environment in which most were born during that time.

An Akonting, predecessor of the banjo is an instrument which dates back to a time long before the style became a well known genre. Since that time, the pedal and slide guitar are often front and foremost at a number of jams and performances. Whereas, the songs and vocals were incorporated from music once known as Field and Holler which laid a strong foundation for the genre. After which, a number of other styles such as folk and lyrical were blended in to create what is now known as modern day blues.

Whether due to style or history, there are a number of societies which promote and support musicians of the genre around the world. Most often, the funds from various events go to support musicians with healing, healthcare, housing and beyond. In order to raise these funds, non-profits often host contests, conventions and other events throughout the year.

Most often, these societies are non-profit organizations which hold a number of events. The funds from these and other events often go to a number of different charities which provide musicians with everything from housing to health care and beyond. In many cases, there are contests in which a number of musicians compete before moving on to an annual or semi-annual award ceremony.
