Why Destination Weddings Are Different From Elopements

By Joshua Lynn

Destination weddings, in its simplest sense, are a type of wedding that are conducted somewhere out of town. The options that couples usually consider for this kind of wedding include resorts and beaches, as well as places with attractive cityscapes. There are even those that choose to have their wedding in a secluded beach where only a few guests are invited. This is probably the reason why some people believe that it as a fancy elopement.

That kind of belief however is far from true. Elopements and destination weddings are two different types of wedding and their only likeness lie on the need to hold the wedding out of town.

Wedding destinations require time for the wedding preparation. This means bridal couples will have to exhaust their choices by doing a lot of research, browsing several websites, making many phone calls and doing some comparisons to determine the perfect location for the wedding.

On the other hand, elopements do not require much time to prepare for it because these are often spur-of-the-moment, whirlwind affairs. Couples that have eloped are rather focused on finding a place where obtaining marriage-license requirements is easy.

The preparation for destination weddings thus requires more effort. Holding a destination wedding means working with different vendors and making decisions about certain wedding elements, such as flowers, pictures, music for the ceremony and reception, food and wedding cake. Elopements can do without these elements.

In addition, elopements are somewhat secretive. The ceremony is often held without announcing it and the it is often attended only by the bride and the groom.

But if a couple don't have to keep their upcoming wedding a secret from anyone and they're holding it somewhere out-of-town, then their choice is clear: they want a destination wedding.

Of course, a destination wedding will not be complete without hiring a wedding photographer. A destination wedding photographer will help couples capture the important moments of their wedding and the beauty of the place as well. Bridal couples can consider hiring a photojournalist that specializes in destination wedding photography especially if they want their wedding photos to be more of candid, natural-looking and minute-moment shots.
