Musicians Can Find Good Prices From Vintage Saxophone Dealers

By Kelly Wood

A musician will often find that they prefer playing an older musical instrument, rather than one which is fresh out of a modern factory. This means that many horn players would rather use vintage saxophone dealers to obtain their instruments than more conventional retailers. With the world still suffering its fair share of economic problems, some great value instruments can be bought second-hand.

For anyone buying a sax, the question will arise as to whether to buy a brand new instrument or a vintage item. There are pros and cons to choosing either a new instrument or a second-hand one, with a new instrument often feeling very exciting to play. New instruments will be in great condition, and use the latest innovations in their design and manufacture, but can be expensive.

A new horn can on occasion cost almost ten times as much as a used equivalent, which restricts the choice of many musicians. If you are in the fortunate position of being able to afford a new instrument, then it can be a good idea to get one. There are other advantages than a lower price, though, if you decide to look for vintage or used instruments instead.

The quality of older instruments is often actually better than many brand new items, simply due to modern manufacturing techniques. Many brand new instruments are mass produced, meaning that the old attention to detail practiced by craftsmen in the past is no longer there. As instruments are produced in greater quantities than ever before, some of the quality is sacrificed for the sake of quantity.

So a second-hand sax can be a good option in terms of the price that a musician is likely to pay for it, and it can also offer a better playing experience. Older instruments do tend to benefit from more hand-crafted techniques in their manufacture, and preserve an individual character. The price range in the used instrument market is also much greater.

Second-hand instruments are also easy to find, with many online as well as high street stores selling them. Some retailers actually specialize in selling older instruments, and, with some planning, it is possible to find a super instrument at a top price. This is often the best way of finding a instrument which really suits you, though it can take time.

Finding the right instrument can often be a matter of experience, though, so it can be tricky for new musicians to find the best deals. Talking to more experienced players is always a good idea in this sort of situation. If possible, take a more experienced musician along with you when you are looking at instruments, as they can provide invaluable assistance, and tip you off as to which instruments are of the highest quality and represent the best value for you.

But using vintage saxophone dealers can be a useful way of finding that right instrument. As well as the likelihood of finding a good price, musicians can also find instruments of quality and character. It you are prepared to spend time looking, then a great instrument could be well within reach.
