A Brief History On The Most Profound Hip Hop Record Labels

By Amy Robinson

The revenue generated by the music sector each year in the US is humongous. Some of the artists considered prolific started as novices and worked their way up to the top, amassing great wealth in the process. However, one fact that holds true is that rappers are heavily dependent on their respective hip hop record labels for aspects such as marketing.

With time, many recording groups have risen to prominence and fallen. Those that have managed to weather the many difficulties in the industry are famous and prosperous today. While the list below conforms to no specific order, it is important to note that it covers the basic profiles of some famous groups and the musical acts signed under them. Many renowned groups began in the nineties before the new millennium heralded a new crop of players in the sector.

The first on the list is Shady Records. With lots of music hits credited to it, the label was founded by the famous rapper Eminem and Paul Rosenberg in the year 1999. It was founded soon after Eminem released his debut album. While its artist base is pretty small, it has managed to churn out global hits since its inception.

The label that follows is Aftermath. It had a significant role to play in the expansion of Shady Records. The group came to be in 1996 when Dr. Dre, the rapper cum billionaire businessman, founded it. Eminem is on record saying Dr. Dre helped mentor him when he was starting out back then. Eminem first rose to prominence through the group.

Many rap enthusiasts never fail to mention Death Row Records when discussing the best groups. It is famous for housing classic and talented rappers. Its artists are also known to be unique in style and composition. However, the group was the subject of conspiracy theories after the demise of Tupac and Biggie, two rappers who were at the top of their game at the time.

Def Jam Music Group is worth mentioning too. Its influence is on a global scale. Some notable artists signed to it include Jay Z, Ja Rule, DMX, Nas and Beastie Boys. After the onset of the 2000s, new entrants such Young Jeezy, Pusha T, Kanye West and Rick Ross came to the limelight through it. Its numerous international successes arguably make it the best modern recording group.

Another great group is Cash Money. Among the noteworthy members in it are Lil Wayne, Drake and Hot Boyz. The artists have stayed true to their roots despite growing influence and appeal from other popular music types like RnB.

Capping the list is Maybach Music Group. Rick Ross is credited with its founding. While its music is top notch, its distribution branch is overseen by Atlantic Records. The group has great acts like Wale, Meek Mill, Ross himself and Omarion. It has produced 21 albums from the time it began in 2009.

There are many other recording houses that look quite promising. It can be said with certainty that the industry looks bright for all who want to venture into it either as musicians or investors. Only time will tell if this will hold true.
