Boudoir Photography - What Is Boudoir Photography?

By Stefanie Riedel

A boudoir is a French word that means a lady's bedroom, changing room, or sitting room. The Boudoir historically was referred to as a private area reserved for dressing and, or bathing. Throughout time, a boudoir took on many meanings, often referred to as a dressing room, or sitting room, the boudoir also described a lady's evening sitting room, which was completely separate from her morning sitting room, which suggests that boudoirs were only seen in elaborate homes owned by the rich. Boudoir photography refers to the type of photography taken of mostly women in their most private moments in their dressing rooms, in which their rooms are decorated in a very fancy and ornate way.

Boudoir photography has been around for quite some time and is not a new concept by any stretch. There are many celebrities that have been photographed boudoir style including Jean Harlow and Kathleen Meyers. Boudoir photography became popular in the early 1900s with the original pinup girls, and has become even more popular and mainstream in recent times as women are becoming more comfortable being photographed in this style.

Generally boudoir photography is shot in a photographer's studio that has been decorated with ornate fashions. Boudoir photography is also shot in luxurious hotel rooms. Boudoir photography has become quite popular and now is considered fashionable to create erotically suggestive images using mostly women and sometimes couples. Nudity is implied rather than explicit.

Commercially, boudoir photography has become increasingly attractive to a market of brides who wish to surprise their husbands, or future husbands by giving them sexy photos on, or before their wedding day. Boudoir photography is also popular for women who wish to give their significant other erotic photos as anniversary, birthday or valentine's day gifts. There are even requests for boudoir photography when women go through a body changing experiences such as after a significant weight loss, or even during maternity.

Boudoir photography has been distinguished from other genres of photography such as glamor, fine art and erotic photography. Boudoir photography is seen as more classy than the aforementioned genres of photography.

Often times women seek out the services of another woman photographer, so that they feel comfortable exposing themselves to someone else knowing that the photos taken are strictly for one person's eyes only. Boudoir photographers are often hard to find because it takes a very talented photographer to make the woman comfortable enough with the camera. Often times you can find Boudoir photographers by searching for wedding photographers who may provide a photography package that includes a boudoir photo shoot.
