What Is Boudoir Photography? - Boudoir Photography Explained

By Stefanie Riedel

A boudoir is a French word that means a lady's bedroom, changing room, or sitting room. The Boudoir historically was referred to as a private area reserved for dressing and, or bathing. Throughout time, a boudoir took on many meanings, often referred to as a dressing room, or sitting room, the boudoir also described a lady's evening sitting room, which was completely separate from her morning sitting room, which suggests that boudoirs were only seen in elaborate homes owned by the rich. Boudoir photography refers to the type of photography taken of mostly women in their most private moments in their dressing rooms, in which their rooms are decorated in a very fancy and ornate way.

Boudoir photography is not a new concept, and there have been numerous celebrities in the past who have participated in boudoir photography. Jean Harlow and Kathleen Meyers are examples of women who have been photographed boudoir style. Boudoir photography became highly popular in the early 1900s with the original pinup girls, and has recently become even more popular in the mainstream as many women are much more comfortable being photographed in this style.

Generally boudoir photography is shot in a photographer's studio that has been decorated with ornate fashions. Boudoir photography is also shot in luxurious hotel rooms. Boudoir photography has become quite popular and now is considered fashionable to create erotically suggestive images using mostly women and sometimes couples. Nudity is implied rather than explicit.

Boudoir photography has become more attractive to a market of brides who wish to surprise their future husbands by gifting them with sexy photos on or before their wedding day. Commercially boudoir photography is also popular for women who wish to gift their significant other for their anniversary, birthday or valentines day. There are even requests for boudoir photography for many body changing alterations such as weight loss, even maternity.

Boudoir photography is distinguished from other types of photography and is considered more classy than it's closely related genres of photography. Genres that boudoir is distinguished from include glamor photography, fine art nude, and erotic photography.

Often times women will seek out the services of another woman photographer when searching for a boudoir photographer. Women generally feel more comfortable with another woman especially knowing that the photos being taken are going to be seen by one special person only. An excellent boudoir photographer can be hard to find because it takes a very skilled and talented photographer to bring out the expressions in a person that are normally only seen by that person's significant other. Often times wedding photographers offer boudoir photography services and also sometimes package boudoir and wedding photo shoots together.
