Venues Where African American Country Singers Can Learn To Play An Instrument

By Amanda Baird

A lot of aspiring african american country singers and decide to take up a musical instrument. While there are some individuals that have a natural knack for music and may be able to learn to play an instrument on their own, many people seek out formal training. Explore the various places that offer music classes.

Public schools offer music instruction. Instruction is generally given a group environment starting in elementary or middle school. By the time a student reaches high school, beginning classes may be unavailable. The only charge usually associated with learning to play an instrument in a public school is the purchase or rental of an instrument.

Serious students may have the chance to take private lessons via the school system either after school or on the weekend at no further charge to them. Private teaching may allow students to take up an additional instrument not usually offered in the course of the school day such as mandolin, piano, guitar or banjo. In some programs, a music theory class may also be taken.

Check out courses in the community. An individual that does not want to take music at school may want to look into classes in his community. Recreation centers sometimes offer music classes particularly in guitar or piano. These classes are often limited to school-aged children. Classes cost money but discounts may be available based on income or high academic achievement.

Look into adult education programs. An adult education center may offer music classes. Guitar is probably the most common instrument instruction is offered on. The instruction at an adult education center is generally inexpensive, very basic and in a group setting. Adult education classes generally not available to anyone enrolled in an elementary or secondary public school.

Take private lessons. Music instrument stores often offer music lessons. Usually the lessons are individualized but group instruction is sometimes offered, particularly when public schools are not in session. Private lessons, though more expensive may allow a student to progress faster. Lessons at a music instrument store are usually open to all ages.

Other venues offer private music including churches, private studios and community centers. People can also hire their own music teacher. Private music teachers may not necessarily have had a lot of formal music training. Their teaching experience may be limited or extensive.Set aside time to conduct interviews and check the references of prospective private music teachers.

Music schools differ from studios in that they offer programs leading to a certificate or degree. Further, unlike a university, instruction is not offered in areas other than music. Music schools offer group and individual instruction to its students and at times, the community. Choosing to take lesson here may be more costly, but the instruction may be a lot more thorough than at other venues.

A few additional options are available for african american country singers and other people that do not have the extra money to pay for lessons. Search online for video tutorials and text-based lessons. Additionally, head over to a local or school library to look for books and lesson manuals.
