By Tanisha Berg

Do you know how to hold your musical instrument properly? It is crucial to know how to properly hold it so as to reduce pressure and tension and also play it comfortably and naturally. To know how to hold a violin properly, you need to focus on three major areas of your body. These are hands, the jaw and chin and the collarbone and shoulder.

Firstly, rest the violin with its back partly on your left shoulder and your collarbone. Then hold it horizontally and position it at an angle to the left or straight in a forward manner. The device is then to get supported by the collarbone gently and also by the left hand. Let the strings and the floor be almost parallel. Depending on your preferences, use a shoulder pad that fills in the space between your shoulder and also the back of the playing gadget. The shoulder pad also gives friction so that the instrument does not fall off your shoulder or pivot easily.

After placing it on your shoulder bone, gently lower your head and rest your jaw-the left side on violins chin rest. Slightly turn your head to left and let the chin rest support most of your jaw. Then slightly turn the it towards the center. The device should be just in front of you and almost in line with your nose. There can be some deviations. For instance, when playing the lower strings you may bring it even more to the center whereas when playing the higher strings the tip of your thumb finger is away from under the neck and therefore it shifts slightly to left. The deviations should not however be extreme.

Place it on inside part of your thumb and allow the lower part on first finger to support the gadget on the other side. The thumb should point towards the back and the hand in addition to the fingers well placed over the instruments strings. The thumb is to be opposite your first or second finger. You may have to change the position of thumb but ensure it maintains flexibility and relaxation. In addition, position your thumb well so that is neither too straight nor slightly bent. There should be a space in between the thumb and the first finger.

Place the elbow under the gadget pointing out slightly to the right. The wrist should be at ease and in line with the forearm. It should not be directed towards the neck or scroll. Rest the neck of your musical device on base part on the knuckle of the first finger of left hand. Ensure that your left arm is under the back so that if you look down the top of the instrument, the arm cannot be seen.

Grip the bow of your violin well by slightly turning its wood to the fingerboard. Rest the bow on the string in the music device between the bridge and fingerboard. Then draw the bow and let the bow and bridge remain in parallel position.

While standing, ensure that your feet are completely apart and the left foot is well aligned with your violin. Besides, the right foot should be behind the left slightly and turned out slightly to your right foot. If seated, ensure that the feet are flat and also in front. Also, right food should also be back slightly than your left. The seat you sit on should have a firm base and sit up straight.

In conclusion, it is important you learn to hold your violin well. This will enable you to play it for a long time without much effort.
