Great Wedding Photography On A Budget

By Charles Murray

Weddings are filled with scenes of precious memories and photography is the tool with which these scenes can be captured. Traditional professional photography costs, however, can be too much for some wedding budgets. Couples can still have beautiful photographs of the wedding day by getting creative and relying on various resources for capturing the memories.

Professional photographers are often the first people couples speak with then planning a wedding. It is important for couples to communicate with photographers about the specific costs of the packages and determine if the costs of the negatives are included in the estimates. Many photographers present plans that offer prints in varieties of sizes or special effects, such as tinting. If the negatives are not included in the purchase price, the couple does not have the ability to get or make a copy without either the photographer providing it or the permission of the photographer. Sometimes people will go to make copies years after the wedding and be unable to do so because the photographer cannot be found. The photographer has copyright privileges of the pictures. Most stores and studios will not duplicate professional photographs unless they are certain there is a release, and this can be difficult and costly to get.

Couples can approach professional photographers and request a discount package, perhaps by only needing the photographer for during the ceremony instead of all day. They should let the photographer know that other studios are being consulted and prices compared. Working together to negotiate a lower price is in everyone's best interests and can help alleviate wedding budget pressures.

There are other ways to save money on wedding photography without compromising quality. The wedding day can be divided into smaller blocks of time, such as preparations, family photos, the wedding party, the couple, during the ceremony, cutting the cake, and the dance. There might be certain times during the day when a professional photographer is needed more than others. Some couples might want to capture the cutting of the cake but do not need to have photos of every guest at dinner. The costs of the photographer should be reduced when less time is required of him to be a part of the day.

Couples should also look to family and friends who might be amateur photographers and are more than willing to take pictures of certain aspects of the day. Maybe an uncle would be the perfect one for getting pictures of the groom getting ready for the ceremony or the couple's first dance. Digital photography advances make it possible for even amateurs to make sure that good pictures are taken. Cameras are also of higher qualities and can produce great pictures without formal lighting and other extras.

Sometimes the decorations at weddings can also be functional, such as placing disposable cameras at each table and encouraging guests to snap photos during the evening. The only costs are the cameras themselves and developing the film. These pictures can result in great candid moments that otherwise would not have been seen by the wedding party.

Wedding photography can also involve creating social media and web pages where guests are encouraged to take their own pictures from the wedding day and upload them to share. Guests could even be made aware of this in the printed wedding program or at place-cards at each reception table. Creating a virtual wedding album can reduce photography costs and produce a collaborative project with fun results.

If family members and friends are not able to provide some of the photography at the wedding, the couple can search for local talented amateurs who are able to provide photography services for less and are most likely willing to provide the film or digital files as well. The wedding couple can look for art students or photography hobbyists and work with them as they would work with a professional agency. A good way to ensure the quality of work is to hire an amateur for the engagement picture and put the wedding photography contract contingent on the results of the wedding photographs.

Wedding photography can be one of the largest expenses for weddings, but saving money can be done. Couples should get creative about alternative sources for pictures and not be afraid to negotiate terms. Reducing the photography budget is possible and can be done without sacrificing the wedding photo album.
