What is Needed to Be a Professional Photographer

By Shawn Smith

What's it like to be a professional Photographer? Are you interested in becoming a professional photographer? There are many questions that must be answered to be best prepared. Questions like what are the steps I would need to take to become a professional? What photographic equipment do I actually need to become a photographer? What makes one photographer better than another? What should a professional photography portfolio consist of?

I've got a number of acquaintances in this industry and who during the last number of years have become leaders in their field. Through sheer persistance and hard work, they can now harvest the benefits and enjoy working in this industry, earning a really big income working the flexible hours that they want. This is the dream of the majority of us, to be able to capure moments that mean something to us in the most impressive manner.

My first suggestion to you is that you jump on the Internet and search Google for articles on professional photographers and understand how the industry works. I will assure you that the first couple of years will be a hard slog and may not harvest much reward. For every successful photographer there is, there are nine others that don't make the grade. It is a very competitive field and only the best survive.

Do your analysis into all the top end cameras. Ensure you find out which you are most ok with and you feel you can get the best shots out of. The cameras these days assist you significantly and can frequently hide the weaknesses that you may have as a photographer. So while the more costly cameras might be a massive up front investment, they'll help you out in the long run and supply the best shots.

Make sure you take a look at the latest photography magazines to stay alongside of the trends and where things are headed. If you do all this, you will already be ahead of the majority of any budding professional photographers.
