Adding The Feel To Your Hip Hop Music

By Delroy Wilkins

Learning and mastery of sound is an essential part in music production. However, the learning of how to mix sound in music is not the only thing to do when it comes to hip hop music production though it does play a vital role. You should also learn how to add some feel into the hip hop track. The feel in music is a way to express yourself in the song. In most cases, the feel should overshadow the quality of sound. The feel in a song is created by 3 main things, the punch, balance and the image of the instrumentals used. When creating the feel in your beats, these three elements need to be taken into consideration.

1. Make it Groovy. We hear sound with our ears but groove connects with our bodies. If your instrumentals lack that groove, you are in serious trouble simply because the groove dictates whether you like something or not even before you think about it. With a groove, you can win people over irrespective of the quality and simplicity of the track.

2. Use unbalanced beats to your advantage. When there are elements that step on another, the instrumentals give a good feeling. Keeping one of the keys unbalances is also a great way to build tension in a mix. You can use the imbalance to create a climax and bring it back to balance levels for the release. Using the imbalance is a great way to direct the listener's attention to a sound.

3. Add depth. The song creates a picture for the listeners and to make the image more realistic and give them something to relate to, you need to target a 3D image. This image can be created through the use of resonance in space or through the interchange of musicians. Depth adds emotion to a song and it can add a new avenue to your mix.

4. Song Arrangement and Dynamics behind Transitions. Variety is a great thing especially in hip hop mix. Songs which are bland and too repetitive rarely captivate an audience. Before and after the changes in your song's sections, there should be a dynamic transition that will mark the change while blending with the entire mix. The progression and changes in the music are integral parts of your track and you should take notice of how the instrumentals flow when your sound changes directions.

5. Make Every Moment Special. The song is a series of beats and each of those is special. You have to work hard to create a mix that will echo not just good music but also emphasize how special it is. Since you are after the feel, work on the track until the mix gives you delightful creeps.
