Hip Hop Instrumentals: The Groove

By Delroy Wilkins

Have you ever tried defining groove when it comes to music? You'll find that, like most people, its quite hard coming up with words to describe grove. The main reason for this is that groove is more about the emotional feeling brought about by music. Although defining groove in hip hop might be a hard thing to do, the fact is that it comprises some specific elements. Beginner beat producers will usually have to train hard and long before they find the right groove for their sounds. For the pro beat producer, groove within their beats is important and they have designed techniques to create it within their sounds.

Groove is responsible for the creation of harmony and rhythm within beats. Groove is the glue that binds different elements within the beat. Similar to other parts within the beat, groove is an easily recognizable element. It's the body that easily responds to the groove within hip hop beats. The same is also the case with other music genres. Every music genre has its own way of creating groove. Whatever the case, without groove, music isn't pleasant to listen to without groove.

The hip hop beat comprises different elements provided by a specific type of instrument. Drums act as rhythm creator, pads as melody creators and, the lead filling out the other elements. The groove then comes in as the binding force bringing these elements together into one harmonic beat.

The best way to describe a groove is like a wave. A wave in the ocean will get your body moving. Your body will move more when the waves are stronger and faster. When the waves are slow and calm, your body sways much slower too. A groove in music will move the body in the same ways. Fast grooves will have people moving rapidly and with high energy. A mellow groove will get people rocking in a much slower and closer way.

Groove can be incorporated within different parts of the track. You can use it initially at the intro grabbing your listener's attention. You can also work it into the chorus or use it to extend the verses. You can also vary the groove by using different tempos to give the track a complete feel.

A majority of novice music producers don't actually understand the importance of incorporating groove within their track. Most will only realize its importance when they find listeners are not interested in their music. As a beginner, it's important that you take time to learn about groove and how to add it into your tracks. This way, you will be able to ensure that listeners are responding to your music through dance.
