The Drum Machine: Free Beats Tutorial

By Delroy Wilkins

Today's drum machines are quite different from traditional machines that were available years ago. The main difference lies in the fact that today's drum machine comes with more features and options compared to early machines. Getting to know more about these features will help you identify the drum machine that best meets your music production needs.

The sampler is one of the basic features found on today's drum machine. This feature enables producers to play back tracks the have uploaded onto the machine. Compared to stock audio options available with the drum machine, the sampler gives you more options with regards to music play back. The sampler also increases the drum machines lifespan and durability. Samplers allow you to get sounds from different sources including other producers, existing tracks as well as allowing you to create your own sounds.

Previous generation drum machines could only store drum sounds. Today's drum machines however have the capacity to store not only drum sounds, but, other instrument sounds as well. The sample chopping feature enables you to select specific part within a song and then cut it down into smaller pieces. These small parts can then be placed on a pad within the drum machine. This allows you to edit, rearrange and blend the sounds to create your own unique and fresh sound. An exciting part about this feature is that it does not limit chopping to drum beats only; you can also use it on other audio samples.

Majority of modern drum machines come with the sequencer feature. The sequencer feature enables you to produce sounds from different types of instruments. The instruments can either be in software or hardware form. This feature allows you to bring created sounds together resulting in harmonic sounds. This feature isn't found in all drum machines. This is especially so for drum machines found in different software since these for part of a larger sequencing system. Native Instrument's drum machine is a good example of drum machine that comes with the sequencer feature. This machine is capable of creating different sounds from different instruments.

Step sequencer: This is a feature that allows a producer to create a beat without having to record in real-time. This is a tool that is useful for producers that don't have the time to produce rhythmic chops.
