Ideal Photo Shoot, Filming Locations

By Leigh Cutright

If you are in charge of finding a perfect location for a photo shoot or perhaps a commercial shoot, you know that your job is one of the most important parts of the whole job. Check out these tips before you go scouting locations.

Before you even begin scouting, get organized and make a list of everything you need from your shooting location. Do you need an indoor or outdoor space? Indoor spaces are must easier to control, although clients do sometimes insist on an outdoor setting. Decide how much space you will need for the actual shoot area, as well as what space you will need for equipment, dressing areas and meeting areas. Make sure whatever space you choose easily accommodates all the people working on the set.

One great option is to locate a spacious city loft apartment. Not only will a loft have a huge main space to work in, you can find some that offer extra rooms and large dressing areas. Some even have large kitchens, where you can set up catering for your staff, and providing food and drinks is a great way to keep everyone on site for the entire shoot. Also, try to choose a loft that has a freight elevator, as well as a regular, passenger elevator. This will make it much easier to bring up equipment and furniture.

Try to find a loft that offers plenty of natural light. Obviously, you will bring lighting equipment with you, but natural light usually provides the best finished product. Many lofts have large windows or even a wall of windows.

Pick a loft that suits the tone of your shoot. Some lofts are fairly industrial, which might be fine for your shoot. Other lofts are more upscale, with wood floors and exposed brick walls. The latter might produce a warmer, more elegant final result.

Not only is the space itself important, you also have to find a city loft that will suit your technical requirements. Obviously you will be expecting wireless internet, but if you can't accommodate all of the electrical needs that your equipment requires your shoot won't happen. So be sure to find a space with 3-phase camlock power distribution.
